Search Engines: Spiders on the Web The Internet has an infestation of arachnids, but they are not the kind we want to exterminate. The programs that run search engines are frequently described as "spiders," and the are very important to the health and welfare of your website. If it weren't for the diligent efforts of these multi-legged creatures none of the searches you perform in search engines would reveal relevant information. The responsibilities of an Internet spider are vast, and they are constantly expected to learn and perform new tricks. Search engine spiders "crawl" all the web pages on the Internet, gathering and cataloging information from the code that makes up your website. They use their many legs to send the information that they find back to the search engine, so that the search engine knows how to rank your site when a search is performed. The most important way to make these discerning arachnids happy is to fill sites with "spider food," and as it turns out, spider food is great for attracting customers too. Spiders enjoy fresh, quality content, and good programming. Your site should be updated when ever relevant information changes, and should have enough content to satisfy your more inquisitive clients. Search engine spiders also like people and will report favorably if there is a lot of traffic on your site. Being found on search engines is very important to the success and return on investment (ROI) for your website- especially if it is the primary way you reach your customers. You could be missing out on lots of revenue if potential customers are unable to find your site by searching in a search engine! Did you know that search engines update their algorithms for ranking sites about every 6 months? Statistics show that between 90 and 95% of people use search engines to find what they are looking for on the web. If people are not finding your site on search engines how will they know you are there? There is a chance that they will remember your web address, and type it into their address bar, but the likelihood of that happening with most potential customers is low. Think like a potential customer and do a couple tests to find out how your site is fairing on the search engines. What words would your clients be searching for? Do you show up on the first couple pages when you search for those words? Do you show up when you search for your company name? If you answer 'no' to any of these questions, or if you are interested in a more compressive Internet Marketing Analysis for your website send an e-mail to sales@electricstores.com, and we can offer some great recommendations! 1. Offer to write testimonials for companies whose products you use. Do this with the agreement that they post the testimonial on their website and link the testimonial to your website. When other companies link to your site, search engines will rank your site higher. 2. If you are a member of a local business group or association, suggest that they create a members page on their website to list the members and link to the members websites- especially yours!
